At Kite, our Shoreditch showroom is less than 100m from the Shoreditch branch of this famous members club, so it’s a question we often get asked. We’re also not the first people to be inspired; last month, “How to get the Soho House look” was covered by the Times.
Since its launch, Soho house has effectively created its own unique interior style, so if you do want to use their style as an inspiration for your home, how should you choose your flooring?
At Kite, we see four broad strategies being used in Soho House timber flooring –
- Darker colours – Soho House typically uses darker colours for their flooring, either smoked finishes (so the red colours), or blacker or browner hues. Dark coloured flooring tends to make rooms feel smaller and cosier, so this is no surprise if you want to create a more intimate atmosphere.
- Premium oils, not surface treatments – These floors are almost always finished with stains that dry into the veneers, rather than cheaper surface UV treatment oils, that you will see on online floors. This means you get 1) a deeper colour and 2) better performing oils to protect against spilled margaritas.
- Reclaimed effect – The floors will have plenty of texture, often created by wire brushing, they will have open cracks, and the knots will be roughly filled. Again, this will make the space feel lived in. You will also see plenty of colour variation in the floors. This style of floor can be very practical, because dents or scrapes become part of the design of the floor, rather than standing out.
- Patterned or plank – We’ve seen both styles; plank floors which are a more straight forward style, but also statement floors like Chevron or Herringbone. These are often fitted with borders to frame the spaces of the club
At Kite, we have supplied 100s of floors that would work in the spaces of the Soho House spaces. Generally, these floors would sit within our Clissold or Reclaimed Range.
We’re strong believers that you cannot choose these floors based on small samples, as you get some much colour variation across sample boards, so if these spaces are one of your sources of inspiration, our advice is to book an appointment at our Shoreditch showroom to view our large sample boards.
